Achievement and SIP

Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Student achievement is assessed at both the formative and assumptive stages through the use of rubrics, quizzes, tests, projects, oral presentations, as well as self and peer evaluations. Student progress is reported through the Progress Report (November) and two Report Cards (January and June), and parent-teacher–student interviews and conferences.

Communication is encouraged through the use of the Glashan student agenda as well as personal conferences and telephone communication. Teachers regularly review assessment data in order to plan lessons that will address strengths and areas of need as shown in the data collected. The School Effectiveness Framework is used by our school team in order to help determine our area(s) for school improvement along with grade 6 EQAO results from our feeder schools. All data is examined in the continual review of curriculum plans and future initiatives. Our staff reviews these results in the context of other measures of achievement to be better equipped to meet the needs of our students. Teachers review current curriculum practices to ensure that they are utilizing best practices and are in line with Ministry expectations.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

Our SIPSA focuses on the area of mathematics and our students’ abilities to use a variety of problem solving strategies. Glashan’s SIPSA committee is composed of our mathematics team who are looking at current and past data and instructional practices and challenges in supporting students not yet achieving at the provincial standard.

Through our participation in the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning Project, we also continue to focus on the incorporation of critical thinking into regular instructional practices. The Glashan staff has benefited from several on-site professional development opportunities in the area of critical thinking and deep learning which has added to our knowledge base as a school team. Close attention is paid to current practices and strategies in all subject areas to ensure that a quality program is being delivered at all times. The addition of iPads and Chromebooks has enhanced our ability to use technology to support learning. We encourage and support our students in bringing their own devices such as iPhones and tablets.

Our annual review of our Character Education Model and Safe Schools Policy ensures a safe, positive learning environment for all students. All students are treated in a fair, consistent, equitable, and sensitive manner. The Glashan honour roll awards recognize and celebrate high academic achievement of 80% and with distinction those who achieve 87% and above. Glashan has an extensive commitment to physical education through its intramural programs, provincially recognized competitive teams, and highly developed competitive athletes. A Safe and Caring School Improvement Plan together with a focus on Character Education address the physical, social and emotional safety of all students and staff.
